Now that we have mastered the alphabet and have moved onto CVC words we began a new program called Words Their Way. Words Their Way is a word study program that individualizes the way students learn to spell words. It is a hands-on approach to practice spelling patterns in words. It allows students to manipulate words and/or pictures into different categories via sorting. The simple process of sorting words into categories is the heart of this word study program. This sorting process helps students analyze and examine, compare and contrast, and differentiate the patterns in words. This hands-on approach helps students organize what they know about words to form generalizations that they can then apply to new words they encounter in their reading and writing.
To launch this program we started with everyone doing the same sort, the -at word family. We will continue with same-vowel word family sorts until we are more familiar with the word sort routines. After that students will have sorts tailored to their needs.
