On Monday we will begin Unit 6: Three-Dimensional Shapes & Numbers Beyond Ten. We are skipping Unit 5 for now to focus on numbers beyond ten, we will come back to Unit 5 and two-dimensional shapes at the end of the year.

Friday update: Today the kindergartners measured with unifix cubes. They were given a "train" of 10 cubes to begin with. While many of them found objects shorter than 10 cubes to measure, many of the kiddos choose to use their train to measure large objects by counting by 10s! The largest thing measured: the length of the classroom from the door to the windows! 492 cubes long! Last week and this week we have been focusing on measuring length with non-standard units (feet, craft sticks, and Unifix cubes). The kindergartners have compared objects in the classroom to develop an understanding of the concepts of longer, shorter and the same length. Today they not only measured objects in the room (e.g. rugs, whiteboard, window, table), but they also measured each other, including Mrs. Jarvis and I! We are hoping to begin using Lexia Reading Core5®, a fun computer-based program with activities that support and build on our classroom curriculum and focus on developing reading skills in six areas: phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Here’s how Lexia works:

Wow, today was a busy day! The kiddos filled the marble jar and voted on a popcorn and movie party, we used Lexia for the first time, and went outside for a second time to play with our big buddies! It was fun :) Now that we have mastered the alphabet and have moved onto CVC words we began a new program called Words Their Way. Words Their Way is a word study program that individualizes the way students learn to spell words. It is a hands-on approach to practice spelling patterns in words. It allows students to manipulate words and/or pictures into different categories via sorting. The simple process of sorting words into categories is the heart of this word study program. This sorting process helps students analyze and examine, compare and contrast, and differentiate the patterns in words. This hands-on approach helps students organize what they know about words to form generalizations that they can then apply to new words they encounter in their reading and writing. To launch this program we started with everyone doing the same sort, the -at word family. We will continue with same-vowel word family sorts until we are more familiar with the word sort routines. After that students will have sorts tailored to their needs. After reading Dr. Seuss' Bartholomew and the Oobleck we mixed together cornstarch and water to make our own gooey oobleck! This week we began our fourth math unit: Path to Adding, Subtracting and Measuring
